Excerpts from study circle on 1st chapter of Prema Vahini:

1) What is "Character" ??

2) Which is more important : Character or Knowledge ? Does knowledge build character or vice-versa ?

3) Can you change your character in your life based on your habits & actions? If so how do you do it.

4) How do we take advantage of Swami being in our midst in this Kali yuga to mould our character ?

Study Circle on Sense Control

What is Sense Control?
  • Apply Celing of desires to senses
  • Using thought, word & deed in conjunction with our actions
  • Making consicous decisions & be aware of the decisions we make through our conduct

What is Purpose of controlling our Senses?

  • Controll the senses as to it does not overwhelm us in our daily actions
  • Swami says Youth is Determination & Determination is to control the senses

How do Young Adults have this Determination?

  • Determination is a Level of Conviction (wanting to improve all the time)
  • {De-Termination} - Terminate all the bad senses
  • Young adult is the age where youths can have a determination to mould ourselves so that it can be applied to 75% part of our life. Kids at younger ages are not matured enough to think and old people have already crossed 75% of their lives

How do we practise Sense Control?

  • Effectively use time & energy
  • Taste for food: our senses become more sublime after a while so that you no longer crave for them
  • Craving for Swami: seeing him, touching him, personal interviews etcc (We have to realise Swami is everywhere (Swami says where man is God is , Deivam Manusha Rupena, God takes the form of man)

Other discussions?

  • Does control of senses require experience of that sense? eg: craving for Swami
  • Starving the sense is not control of senses - If you stop doing something long enough, desire for that fades
  • Sense control is mainly moving around our desires to other activities rather than trying to stop one particular thing (eg: Fill your time with Godly thoughts & desires)

Mind control or Sense control?

This thing stuck me on the way to work - Sense control is all about Mind control. "Senses" by themselves are not on their own. The mind drives the senses.

So according to our discussion - if we can fill our mind with various positive activities, then the mind will not pursue the negative activities.

So for example, may be working out for physical exercise is a more positive pursuit than being a couch potato watching TV. But even in that case taken to an extreme, if one is obsessed with their body and its shape - it is not a positive thing right?
